My hard drive audit

Whats on my primary drive:

Search Engine Optimization (SEO), what little I know

I have learned a little about SEO over the years and have had some good results with some of my clients websites and my own. I wanted to share a quick run down of some various things I have learned.

Random thoughts:
  • Make sure pages are well structured and the code is as clean as possible (XHTML compliant helps with this). Google only reads the data of the page and well structure helps it identify what's important on a page.
  • Don't use Flash and expect it to help in anyway. No spider can read the contents of a Flash file and therefore all is ignored.
  • Make use of H tags as H1 tags will be read as the most important information on a page in the body (this is below page name, URL, and title).
  • The higher up in a page the information the more important / relevant it will appear.
  • Don't rely on images to convey important information - Images can't be interpreted by Google. If images are used make sure you have well worded ALT tags and don't make them too long, short and sweet.
  • Don’t use links that say Click here or other verb type actions. Use links that are descriptive to where its going and what will be accomplished by clicking the link.
  • Try and get yourself into the DMOZ (www.dmoz.org) - this helps you get into lots of other search engines which in turn helps in Google. DMOZ is a open database of websites used by lots of search engines including Google. This also will help you get listed in Google's regional directories.
  • Don't over do meta tags. Tags with more than 255 characters or abouts will be ignored. Plus Google does not use these for relevance - they look at content.
  • Come up with a list of keywords you want to be found on when search and make sure you page content uses these words. Make sure these words are used in the Title, ALT tags, and H tags (with H1 being important). This is referred to as keyword density, too much will get you penalized, too little and you will not be found - find the balance.
  • Get yourself onto any site you can - except links farms where you could end up getting de-listed from Google. Post answers in newsgroups, answers on forums, write articles, start a blog on your website, include a signature with your website where ever you post. Basically get your name and site out there.
  • Be consistent in your websites URL. Either use http://YourDomain.com or http://www.YourDomain.com and stick with it. Google sees these as different and you want one to get as much credit as possible for each page.
  • Make page names as relevant as possible.
  • Don’t make too many changes. It takes time for a change to affect your rankings or search results. Wait a couple months on a main change to take affect and don't be discouraged, it takes time.
  • DO NOT use under-handed methods for getting ranked higher like link farms, cloaking or lots of 1pt or text that matches the background color. This is a sure way to get de-listed.

Atari 2600 - most people's first home arcade system

Stella is an emulator (software that simulates or replicates hardware) and comes with all the ROMs (the games) which will bring back alot of memories of the countless hours playing the Atari 2600.

After playing for about 30min I will probably never play again - I will let it stay as a memory. Right now I'm more into MAME32 which is a Multi-Arcade Emulator which brings back all the games you found in the arcade (over 6000 games available).

Viewing and Organizing RAW Images in Windows XP

Whitepaper: Viewing and Organizing RAW Images in Windows XP:

"Often likened to a ‘digital negative,’ a RAW image is the native image format for a growing number of quality digital cameras. RAW images typically contain the original camera sensor data recorded at the time of capture along with camera settings and other information. Using special PC software, photographers can “process” RAW images to vary the exposure, white balance, and other settings long after the image was captured. This creative flexibility and extra level of protection against mistakes are key reasons photographers choose to shoot RAW.

Because of the camera-specific nature of RAW files, they are not supported natively within Microsoft Windows. As a result, photographers shooting RAW have not been able to take advantage of the built-in features provided in Windows XP for viewing, organizing, and printing RAW photos--until now.

This paper discusses how users can view, organize, and print camera RAW images using the Microsoft RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer Powertoy for Windows XP."

Small Business help

I have been wanting to make a post of this information for a while but it just seems to get pushed back. Well, I now found a little time to get the information organized to make a post about it.

This is some of the information that I have come across for starting, running, and growing a small business. Nothing fancy, just a list of things.
  • E-Myth: This book is a must read for anyone starting a small business (no matter what), running a small business, or just curious about businesses. Don't pass this one up.
  • Sales and Marketing @ Entrepreneur.com: A good collection of articles. Check back often and keep ontop of sales and marketing. Don't wait until your in a feast or famine situation with your business.
  • Inc.com: Another good resource for companies.
  • Small Business Administration: The US goverments website to help small businesses succeed.
  • S Corp vs LLC: Most small businesses will become one of these two legal entites. LLC's are easier to setup and maintain but S-Corp's provide much better tax breaks.
  • CafePress: Great website for getting some swag for your company (or anything else for that matter). Costs nothing out of pocket and very easy to setup. Check out Veign's shop.
  • Nolo: Online resource for do-it-yourself legal stuff.

Most of the cameras in this range have a 3x optical zoom which in my opinion is just not enough. Far better spending a bit more and going with a camera like: Sony Cybershot DSCH 5.1 (12x Optical zoom) or Canon Powershot S2 (12x Optical zoom).

Yahoo! Answers (beta)

Yahoo! Answers lets you ask a question and get an answer from a real person.

This is what you see after submitting a question:

Possibly 14 days to get an answer? Seems like it would be faster just to use Google.

Heres a sample of questions on the main page.

2) Who is the best teen porn star?

New XSS vulnerability in IE

We've received some questions regarding a reported cross-site scripting (XSS) issue affecting Internet Explorer. Google Desktop was used in a proof of concept to demonstrate how, in some cases, this issue could allow an attacker to obtain sensitive information.

This issue may be a bit confusing because it is not really an XSS issue. A better way to describe it might be to call it “cross-site information disclosure”.

Our investigation indicates that this issue will have limited impact because an effective attack requires a website to expose sensitive information in a specific way. Basically, an attacker would need to find a way to make a response look like a Cascading Style Sheet, and that response would need to contain sensitive information.

Google has done a good thing for the protection of our mutual customers by mitigating the issue on their servers. We think that is great. The underlying cross-site issue still exists within IE and I want to reassure you that we are investigating the root cause of this issue. Once the investigation is complete we'll take appropriate action for our customers which may include fixing this in a future security update for IE.

To recover a Word document that can't be opened and hangs Word

  1. Create a new document.
  2. Type "This is a Test."
  3. Save the document.
  4. From the Edit menu, choose Select All.
  5. From the Edit menu, choose Copy.
  6. From the File menu, choose New.
  7. Select a New Blank Document.
  8. From the Edit menu, choose Paste Special.
  9. Select either Unformatted or Formatted text, and click Paste Link.
  10. From the Edit menu, choose Links.
  11. The Links dialog box appears. Select the filename of the first linked document and click Change Source (in Word 2.x, the button is Change Link).
  12. The Open dialog box appears and asks which document you want to change the link to. Select the document you can no longer open and click Open.
  13. Click OK in the Links dialog box (in Word 2.x, enter the path and filename).
  14. The data/text from the damaged Document will appear (provided there was any recoverable data/text). On the Edit menu, click Links, and select Break Links (Cancel Links in Word 2.x).
  15. You can now reformat and save the recovered text. This method works because during a link, part of the header information is not read. This allows you to open the file if this part of the header is the damaged area of the document.
Not sure where I got this but thought others may get some use out of it.

Search engine roundup

Google:
Not much to say about Google that isn't already known by everyone. This is my goto search engine for searching for things, defining words (using define:[word]), searching for images, and now looking at off-beat videos at Google Video

Yahoo:
I have no idea why I use this still but I do. Mainly I use it to make sure my sites and my clients sites are listed. I find myself almost never using Yahoo for just doing a basic search.

MSN:
Up and coming? Not sure I can say that but I find it is starting to be a pretty good search engine - sometimes more relevant results. I know MS is working hard on this so keep and eye out.

Myriad:
Useful? Maybe. Interesting? Yes. Why? Because it allows you to search for a single item and see the results across many search engines. Good way to compare results. Nice layout too.

Twingine:
I like the name far more that I like the look of the site. Not sure anymore development is being done on this website. Worth a quick look and then move on to Myriad if you are looking for multiple search engine results.

A9:
The results are fast and the images results on the left side is kinda cool. Its the maps on A9 that makes this search engine very, very powerful. The maps, for some cities, allows you to see 'blockview images' where you see actuall images of what the streets and building look like as if you were standing on the street.

Mamma Meta Search:
I like this search engine for one feature not seen on any other search engine (at least what I can find) and that is you can email yourself the search results. That in itself keeps me coming back.

PreviewSeek:
Provides a structured view of the results to make drilling down easier. They also have this preview feature which lets you view the site without ever leaving the results. This search engine is still in beta so we'll see what happens over time.

Hakia:
From the site "Hakia is building the Web's first "meaning-based" search engine, one that will bring answers and meaningful results to questions on any topic.". Some of the questions I asked didn't yield any meaningful results but since its still in beta I will cut it some slack.

DMOZ:
This is more of a database then a search engine. The DMOZ provides there database to alot of search engines (including Google). Make sure your site is listed in the DMOZ and if its not start the process because it takes a while.

I know there are literally hundreds, maybe thousands, of search engines but these are some of the ones I use.

GroupBar Project

GroupBar is lightweight desktop tool created by the VIBE group that offers enhanced window management capabilities in a Windows taskbar-like setting. The basic concept is that through simple drag-and-drop operations on window tiles within the bar, users can create lightweight, transient grouping relationships that allow them to perform certain higher-level window layout functions on multiple windows at once. In addition, windows and groups in the GroupBar can be persisted in a "Snapshot" which attempts to remember the position and contents of each window in a way that allows the Snapshot to be recreated at a later time, even if the windows have been rearranged or closed.

Word + HTML = Bad Markup

If you must use Word to create a HTML document then at least clean the code of all (some) of the Word only tags thats inserted in the markup.

Word 2003 / XP:
  1. Re-think this approach and make sure you really, really must use Word for this
  2. Select File -> Save As Web Page
  3. From the Save as Type drop down select Web Page, Filtered
Word 2000:
  1. Download the Office 2000 HTML Filter
  2. Install the Filter
  3. Open the document to clean
  4. Select File -> Export To -> Compact HTML

If you think this will create good HTML code then you would be completely wrong. This produces cleaner code, but only cleaner for Word - still garbage.

Hidden data in Word documents

Did you know that there is often data hidden in Word documents that do not display when opened normally in Word?. Yup its there alright and some of it can be a security breach if not handled, or be embarrassing if something long deleted.

How to view the hidden data:
  1. Select File -> Open
  2. Browse to the file you want to open
  3. In the Files of Type field select Recover Text from any File (*.*)
  4. Open the document and all data is viewable
How to delete the hidden data:
  1. Download the Remove Hidden Data tool from Microsoft
  2. Run the tool and follow the on-screen instructions
