Adobe Labs releases Flex 2.0 Beta

Adobe Labs releases Flex 2.0 Beta to the public to try to increase the developers base.

What is it?
"Flex 2.0 delivers an integrated set of tools and technology enabling developers to build and deploy scalable Rich Internet Applications. Flex provides a modern, standards-based language supporting common design patterns and includes a client runtime, programming model, development environment, and advanced data services."

One thing I have to say about it is "Cool Logo!". I watched a few of the demos they have on the Beta website and this looks very cool. I may download it and give it a try - just need something to do with it...

Internet Explorer 7: Beta 2 Preview

Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Preview is intended to enable developers, Web developers and IT pros to begin to test the new browser for compatibility with their applications and Web sites.

Cool Tool: Why Reboot?

Why Reboot?: "Exodus WhyReboot is a small (60KB) Windows application that displays a list of pending file operations that will occur after rebooting your computer. This is useful in determining why an installer has notified you that a reboot is needed."

on how this application probably works.

Critical security flaw found in Winamp

A critical security flaw has been found in Winamp:

Evrsoft's 1st Page 2006 is NOT free. That ends the evaluation for me. Oh well, onto other things.

(should be noted that I am not against them selling it, its just they stated it would be free and released a final version (release candidate) stating it will be free, and now they pull the rug out)

AdSenseLog

AdSenseLog is a tool for checking and analyzing your Adsense ads data (Content, Search and Custom/URL channels).

Features
  • Automatically check your Adsense statistics, setup your own interval.
  • Alerts - pop up a window, play a sound, or send an e-mail.
  • Extensive statistics: Clickthrough, EPC and CPM data, Daily, weekly or monthly views. See your best days, daily/weekly or monthly averages, and more.
  • Supports Content, Search and Custom/URL Channel data.
  • Supports Ad unit or Page unit impressions for aggregate data.
  • Export your data to HTML, CSV and Bitmap files.
Ok. enough information from the devlopers site. Why do I like AdSenseLog? Well, its mainly the features around charting and graphing. Being able to see results in a chart format makes analyzing the information much, much easier. If for nothing else this is the reason to try AdSenseLog

A couple things that need to be fixed:
1) The screen that asks if I want to minimize to the system tray gets annoying. I always want to exit on closing and there should be a way to remember this
2) I'm colorblind and there needs to be a way to set custom colors on the charts / graphs
3) When resizing the application the tablulated data needs to resize to use the available space. Really no reason why I should have to scroll columns when the application is wide enough to accomodate it.

Give it a try as this is a great application and it will only get better.

How to send large files to someone, the right way

You really shouldn't be sending anyone large files through email (unless its a Gmail account or something similiar). Most users using an ISP mail account will have some limit on the size a single email can be - usually somewhere between 2Meg - 8Meg. What you should be doing is using a service like one of the one's listed below.

These online services will send the person an email stating a file is awaiting them for download. Now they can download it when they want, and if they want, without it being forced upon them.

You Send It: Files up to 1Gig

What to expect from cell phones in 2006

What do you want to see in your next cell phone?

  • Plays MP3's and videos
  • Be able to read blogs and video blogs
  • Listen to the radio (local free)
All-in-one devices is something that I on the fence about. In one hand its nice to have certain features in my cell phone, like listening to MP3's - less things I have to carry. On the other hand when you try and do everything you end up doing nothing right - What you end up is each device is lacking and nothing is exactly what you want.

For me the future is going to be a cell phone / pda / 802.11g enabled device. Thinking about it I would probably want to break the phone out...

Tracing An Email

Tracing An Email
"The purpose of this guide is to show the process involved in tracing an email. The first step required to tracing an email is finding out the headers of the email. What are headers? Email headers are lines added at the top of an email message that are used by servers as the email goes on route to get delivered. Generally email clients only show the standard To, From, and Subject headers, but there are more."

Was the WMF vulnerability intentional?

"Steve Gibson (of SpinRite fame) proposed a theory in his weekly Thursday-night podcast last week that if true, would be the biggest scandal to ever hit Microsoft - that the Windows Metafile (WMF) vulnerability that drew so much media attention last month is actually a backdoor programmed intentionally by Microsoft for unknown reasons."

VR3 allows you to play MP3's from your car through the lighter and your existing car stereo. The device transmitts the audio on an FM channel that gets picked up by the stereo...

IE7 fixes SELECT issues

IEBlog : For the SELECT few...: Problem is if you are developing a website you can't be sure that the user will have IE7. Since IE6 will be around for many, many years the fix won't help much.

What they need to do is patch IE6 too.

Did you grow up in the 80's?

How can you tell?

1. You've ever ended a sentence with the word "SIKE."
2. You can sing the rap to the "Fresh Prince of Bel Air" and can do the "Carlton."
3. Girls wore biker shorts under their skirts and felt stylishly sexy.
4. Two words: Hammer Pants.
5. You wore a ponytail on the side of your head.
6. You made your mom buy one of those clips that would hold your shirt in a knot on the side.
7 You wore stone washed Jordache jean jackets and were proud of it.
8. L.A.Gear....need I say more?
9. You remember reading "Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing" and all the Ramona Quimby books.
10. You know the profound meaning of "WAX ON, WAX OFF."
11. You ever wore fluorescent clothing. (Some of us...head-to-toe).
12. You can remember what Michael Jackson looked like before his nose fell off and his cheeks shifted.
13. You still get the urge to say "NOT" after every sentence.
14. You ever owned a pair of Jelly-Shoes (and probably in neon colors, too).
15. After you saw "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure" you kept saying "I know you are, but what am I?
16. You remember "I've fallen and I can't get up."
17. You remember going to the skating rink before there were inline skates.
18. You ever got seriously injured on a Slip and Slide.
19. You have played with a Skip-It.
20. You had or attended a birthday party at McDonalds.
21. You've gone through this nodding your head in agreement.
22. "Don't worry, be happy."
23. You wore, like, EIGHT pairs of socks over tights with high top Reeboks.
24. You wore socks scrunched down (and sometimes still do).
25. You remember boom boxes.
26. You remember Alf, the li'l furry brown alien from Melmac.
27. You remember New Kids on the Block when they were cool.
28. You know all the words to Bon Jovi's "SHOT THROUGH THE HEART."
29. (You just sang those words to yourself.)
30. You remember watching Magic vs. Bird. Oh yeah............it will never be that good again
31. Homemade Levi shorts... (The shorter the better.)
32. You remember when mullets were cool!
33. You had a mullet!
34. You still sing "We are the World."
35. You tight rolled your jeans.
36. You owned a banana clip.
37. You remember "Where's the Beef?
38. You used to (and probably still do) say "What you talkin' 'bout Willis?"
39. You had big hair and you knew how to use it.

Evrsoft's First Page 2006 - The 100 mile view

This the 100 mile view of Evrsoft's new First Page 2006.
  • Installer: Nothing eventful. Easy to install, no problems.
  • Starting and loading: A little slow for my liking but it seems to preload alot of tag information, and things to make the application run faster while using it. Again, nothing major here.
  • Start Manager: This is the first screen that is shown in a default environment (you can switch this off by unchecking the Show at Startup option at the bottom). This is a very nice feature and often not found in a free solution. You have alot of templates at your fingertips and the ability to add your own. Very nice.
  • The Editor: This is one powerful application. I like the layout, docking windows, the general look and feel, and the ability to switch between four modes: Normal, Easy, Advanced, and Hardcore. They made this application very customizable to the users preference. Very nice.

Next is the 50 mile view - a bit more in depth of the Editor

Delete Browsing History in IE7

IE7 will have a new feature called 'Delete Browsing History' which give you better control over what IE will store and thus clear you tracks.

From the blog:

What does this feature really do?
It deletes the following items which are split into five categories, listed below:

  • Temporary Internet Files: Downloaded files cached on the client for quick access
    • Temporary Internet Files cached for quick access
    • Cached files containing Offline favorites
    • Information stored by other applications in the Temporary Internet Files folder (e.g. attachment files stored by Outlook)
  • Cookies: Information persisted by the client on behalf of the server
    • Cookies
    • XML Userdata cache
  • History: website addresses (URLs) stored to enable History/most recently used website addresses
    • Typed website addresses used for Addressbar Autocomplete
    • The list of most recently used website addresses in the Run… dialog
    • URL History entries (excluding ones marked as Offline Favorites)
    • Stored value for Encoding (Code Page)
  • Form Data: User-entered personal data stored by the client
    • AutoComplete form data
  • Passwords: User-entered personal data stored by the client
    • AutoComplete password data

Save Time and Effort in Typing URL Addresses

Save Time and Effort in Typing URL Addresses is one keyboard shortcut every mouser (person that uses the mouse for almost everything) should know and use....

I rely heavily on the mouse but love this keyboard shortcut..

Create a Windows XP reset password disk

To create the disk:
  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click User Accounts.
  2. Click your account name.
  3. Under Related Tasks, click Prevent a forgotten password.
  4. Follow the directions in the Forgotten Password Wizard to create a password reset disk.
Also, check out the post on How to reset your Windows XP Admin password.

I have been stumbling across alot of WinXP tips and tricks lately but haven't done much posting on them. Most of them I wouldn't consider tricks as much as I would consider them 'things you haven't discovered yet'.

ThinkAll.com = Think Again

ThinkAll.com may not be what you are expecting. Although the CD's are sent to you free (pay shipping only) your CD's must be sent back to them within 10 days or your credit card will automatically be charged. Not only that you are signing up for a membership where they automatically send you CD's and charge your credit card if not returned after a very short evaluation period.

So, watch out for this company or you may find unexpected charges on your credit card and canceling the account may be difficult (so users have told me)

From their Terms of Service (which people rarely read):
"7. Membership and Billing. THINK ALL provides numerous products, services, and software in connection with its business. With respect to software provided hereunder, there is a non-refundable shipping and handling fee for the initial complete four (4) CD software set. You may keep any two (2) CD’s free of charge. The other two (2) CD’s are yours to review during a ten (10) day trial period. If for any reason you decide the complete set is not for you, simply visit us at www.thinkall.com/freeCD.html before your ten (10) day free trial expires. You will need to follow the instructions at such web link to indicate your intention to return two (2) of the CD’s, and you will not be charged for the complete 4-CD set. If you elect to keep all four (4) CD’s or you otherwise fail to comply with the foregoing instructions, you will be billed the discounted price of $19.95 (which is up to 80% off the store price) for each of the other two (2) CD’s. Every four (4) to five (5) weeks, you will receive four (4) new THINK ALL software CD’s based on your preferences with the same ten (10) day trial terms as your first shipment described above. You may discontinue shipments any time by visiting our web site at https://www.thinkall.com/freeCD.html, for more information and filling out the appropriate cancellation information therein contained.

10. Authorization. Unless and until this agreement is cancelled in accordance with the terms hereof, you authorize the company to charge your credit card to pay for any charges previously agreed upon as described in Section 7. You hereby further authorize the company to charge your credit card for any and all products provided by the site. You are only allowed to have one membership per website at a time."

User Mode Process Dumper Version 8.0:
"The User Mode Process Dumper (userdump) dumps any running Win32 processes memory image (including system processes such as csrss.exe, winlogon.exe, services.exe, etc) on the fly, without attaching a debugger, or terminating target processes. Generated dump file can be analyzed or debugged by using the standard debugging tools."

An easy way to import your email into your Gmail Account. With 2G of space available to you this may be the only online email account you will ever need.

But what to do with all your Yahoo Email, Hotmail, and maybe some emails in Outlook? Move them to your Gmail Account using GMail Loader.

Also, check out Gmail Manager and Gmail Driver too.

Make your own stamps

Zazzle allows you to make custom postage stamps. It's different but paying extra just for a custom stamp is not something I am willing to do. Who looks at the stamp anyway...

IE Tab extension for Firefox

IE Tab lets you view a webpage, like IE, right from Firefox. This is a great extension when you run across a website that wasn't designed for displaying properly in Firefox (Microsoft listening?). Also, good for web devs that should, at a minimal, check sites in Mozilla based browsers and IE.

Online Fax, Hosted PBX, Voice Mail and Fax to Email Services

Innoport is one great fax service.

I use this for my business fax and can't say enough good about them. The part I like the most is all faxes come to me via email in PDF format - which makes it easy to file away. Also, I get a toll-free fax number which is always a plus.

Sending faxes is easy too as you can upload and send a Word doc, PDF, Webpage and about 10 other formats...

Check it out if you need a low cost, feature rich, fax service.

Can you make more than with Google's Adense? Who knows. I going to be adding their ads to this blog but also my Resource Center (for devs) and see what happens...

Easy CSS Menus - Lose that bloated Javascript navigation

Stop using Flash or Javascript for navagation when a CSS menu will do the same thing.

Why?

Because Flash is being blocked by alot of Firefox users using a very popular extension called FlashBlock. Don't have this extension yet, get it.

And Javascript, don't even get me started on this one. Not only is Javascript not supported on every browser or allowed under certain security settings, but its often buggy and riddled with errors.

Sending large files

I was going to do a review of sites that offer free services for sending large files to people but ran across this guys blog which does a good job. My work is done.

A search engine for Audio and Video only

Singing Fish is a search engine geared towards audio and video only. I have done several posts on search engines in the past from the Search Engine Roundup to Exalead (a nice search engine in my opinion)

Some DVD copying software

Just some software for those wanting to backup your DVD's. The last item is a site that hosts the downloads for alot of these DVD tools...
  • DVD Shrink (free): DVD Shrink is software to backup DVD discs. You can use this software in conjunction with DVD burning software of your choice, to make a backup copy of any DVD video disc. DVD Shrink will also burn your backup DVD, if you have installed the latest version of Nero. You can download a demo version of Nero here. If you already possess alternative burning software and prefer to stick with it, then you can still use DVD Shrink. The output from DVD Shrink can be saved as files on your hard drive, which you can then burn with software of your choice.
  • DVD Encryptor (free): DVD Decrypter is a highly versatile VOB-ripping utility. The software takes advantage of both the DeCSS Plus and VobDec algorithms for looking up and decrypting the CSS encryption. DVD Decrypter is also multi-angle aware, and capable of removing the Macrovision scrambling key, as well as the region code during the ripping process.
  • DVD Plus Video: This site contains the download for both the of the above software packages.
**DVD copying may be illegal so do so at your own risk**

The WMF Faq - what you need to know about this vulnerability

Read the WMF FAQ and be informed of the latest vulnerability for all MS operating systems.

Microsoft Advisory:

A better shorten URL resource

URLx is so much better than TinyURL or SnipURL. URLx includes the domain name in the shortened URL unlike the other two. I would never click on a TinyURL for the reason that I never knew where I was going.

Finally someone fixed what I have thought to be the main issue with shortened URL's - obfuscated URL's

URLx:
http://urlx.org/

Example:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Veign&btnG=Google+Search

becomes
http://urlx.org/google.com/10d4

See how you can tell its going to the Google.com domain
