You try one company's Web site. It's plain, but it lists pricing information, the models it services, and its contact information. Then you try another company's site. It makes you sit through a three-minute Flash presentation before letting you explore the site. (There's a "skip this intro" button at the top right, but the button is camouflaged.) And, instead of getting pricing information, you have to fill out a form and wait for a salesperson to call. With probably millions of websites competing for the same thing your website has to be as easy as possible on the user. Make it confusing, too difficult or too many clicks to get around and your users will move on. Link: http://.../online_marketing/is_your_web_site_usable.mspxLabels: design, marketing, website

All you have to do is sign up for a Webmaster account with Google and then add a website profile and sitemap. This is a fantastic book for anyone looking at creating their own website using Microsoft's latest web design application called Expression Web. Expression Web is setting itself up to rival the biggest players in the web design business (like Dreamweaver) and having this book will bring you up to speed in a short period of time. The reason I like this book is its not the typical 'this is how you use this application' type of book. This book teaches you the proper way to create a website using current and established technologies. What this means for a beginner is not only to you learn Expression Web but you are also getting a strong foundation on building websites. If you use Virtual PC 2007 you know that the virtual hard drive files (.VHDs) can grow to extremely large sizes. Part of this is because the .VHD files dynamically expand when software is installed in the .VHD however after the installation, the original setup files are deleted and no longer take up space in the .VHD, however the .VHD does not correspondingly dynamically shrink in size. If you use Google Analytics then you know there was a major update about a month ago which made Google Analytics the best web stats application around. Well, its gotten a few more improvements based on user feedback. Hourly ReportingMany of you listed hourly reporting as the most important feature missing in the new interface. We've put it back. Several of the reports now have a "View by: Daily/Hourly" switch that allows you to select whether you want to see your data by day or by hour. Andy Beal, our friends at Yelp, and thousands of others can rejoice in their hourly window to the world. Clickable URLsDanny Sullivan and a legion of others will be thrilled to see that we've added the ability to click straight through to external pages from links referenced in reports. Just click on the icon next to any link listed in the Referring Sites, Top Content, Top Landing Pages, and Top Exit Pages reports. Cross Segmentation by Network LocationMany of you expressed disappointment that you couldn't cross segment reports by Network Location. Now you can. Increased number of data rows per pageThe interface now allows you to view up to 500 rows of data on a single report page, increased from a maximum of 100 rows. Bounce Rate increase/decreaseOur always observant resident analytics evangelist, Avinash Kaushik, pointed out that an increase in bounce rate (not desirable) was displayed in green and a decrease in bounce rate (a desirable result) was displayed in red. He was right, so we flipped the colors. Bounce rate increases are now displayed in red and bounce rate decreases are displayed in green. Ah, much better. How heavy is information? Most of us know that computers represent all types of information—e-mails, documents, video clips, Web pages, everything—as streams of binary digits, 1s and 0s. These digits are mathematical entities, but they are also tangible ones: They are embodied and manipulated as voltages in electronic circuits. Therefore, every bit of data must have some mass, albeit minuscule. This prompted DISCOVER to ask the question: How much would all the data sent through the Internet on an average day weigh? Most don't know about, or use, the tilde (~) when using Google. Let me explain how the tilde can help. The tilde, when placed immediately before a word, will not only search for that word but also synonyms of the word. For instance a search for Cooking Recipes will only locate sites with those two words in it but a search for ~Cooking Recipes will not only find sites with cooking but also culinary, chef, food, kitchen and such. Very easy to add to your searches and really makes a difference in the results More Information: http://www.google.com/help/refinesearch.htmlLabels: google
