What is the Google Supplemental index?

When Google originally introduced Supplemental Results in 2003, our main web index had billions of web pages. The supplemental index made it possible to index even more web pages and, just like our main web index, make this content available when generating relevant search results for user queries. This was especially useful for queries that did not return many results from the main web index, and for these the supplemental index allowed us to query even more web pages. The fewer constraints we're able to place on sites we crawl for the supplemental index means that web pages that are not in the main web index could be included in the supplemental.

Troubleshoot IIS7 errors like a pro

Troubleshoot IIS7 errors like a pro: "So you just moved your application to an IIS7 server, and now you are getting an error when you make a request to it. This seems to be a popular theme on IIS.NET forums these days, and after answering a hundred or so of these posts, I figured I should do something to help people track down and fix their issues with a little less frustration.

Server software, and web servers specifically, are very complex and highly configurable systems that support multi-tier applications using a variety of technologies and subsystems, and endure further complexity due to security, performance, and reliability demands, so it’s a wonder it all works as well as it does in the end. IIS7 strives to improve the experience of diagnosing and solving problems when they do occur, so knowing how to use the new IIS7 diagnostics features can come a long way in helping you become a pro at troubleshooting server problems."

GIMP’s major UI revamp

GIMP is well known as a powerful application, and especially in the last few years has gained a rather large community of users. There’s also a large group of people for whom GIMP would be their tool of choice, if it had the same kind of attention to user interface as Inkscape, GNOME, Firefox and other modern Open Source apps.

Mozilla Admits Firefox Exploit Caused by Firefox Bug, Not IE

Mozilla Admits Firefox Exploit Caused by Firefox Bug, Not IE: "On July 10, engineers at Secunia issued a security advisory, rated 'Highly Critical,' warning Firefox users that their browser could be tricked into executing arbitrary JavaScript code. Soon afterward, Mozilla developers issued a statement saying the problem was caused by Internet Explorer, which could trick Firefox into executing that code. This morning, Mozilla security chief Window Snyder had to issue a retraction, stating Firefox could just as easily trick Firefox into doing the same thing"

Convert YouTube videos to MPG (and other formats)

Vixy.net makes it easy to convert a YouTube video, and all FLV video formats, to MPG4 / AVI / MOV / MP4 / MP3 / 3GP.

This service allows you convert a Flash Video / FLV file (YouTube's videos, etc) to MPEG4 (AVI/MOV/MP4/MP3/3GP) file online. It is using a compressed domain transcoder technology (outline in Japanese). It converts FLV to MPEG4 faster and less lossy than a typical transcoder.

Want to setup your own Vixy.net? Then check out the Open Source project they have released.

How to make Windows XP last for the next seven years

How to make Windows XP last for the next seven years: "Windows Vista may be shiny and brand new, but as plenty of PC users will tell you, sometimes newer isn't better. Many PCs simply don't have the horsepower to run the new operating system, and even those that have the juice may get bogged down by processor-and RAM-hungry Vista.

If you've got Windows XP, worry not -- you can keep it running on your hardware for years to come. As with an old car, though, if you plan to keep XP around for a while, you're going to have to spend some time maintaining it. Think of us as your virtual mechanics. We'll give you tips, tweaks and tricks so that you'll be able to keep XP running smoothly, at top performance, for smooth operation and long life."

See what domains are doing through the Total Domains Trends Worldwide statistics. Pretty amazing the amount of domains that are gained and lossed in a given week.

Just shows how difficult a good domain name is to get by how many are gained each week. One of the factors in choosing the company name of Veign was that I was able to get Veign.com. This is a trend that will continue until something better than the internet comes our way (not in my life time).

Locate huge savings at Amazon

A neat little trick to locate huge savings at Amazon.com is by entering a special URL that displays products from a certain category and limits the results to products that are discounted by a certain amount.

Example URL:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/?node=468642&pct-off=90-

URL Breakdown:

Url to get to Amazon Search:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/?

Display products from the Computer and Video game category (node):
node=468642

Show products that are at least 90% off:
&pct-off=90-

That's all there is to it. The link below provides a URL generator to make the whole process simple.

The Atmosphere: "The atmosphere describes all the air surrounding the earth, from the ground all the way up to the edge of deep space.
