IDEA: Search engine query repository and bookmarking service

Overview
Create a bookmarking system where the user no longer bookmarks a single website but instead is bookmarking a highly perfected (over time in the system) search engine query. What this does is prevent the annoying 'page not found' you get when you recall a bookmark. Instead you are always presented with the best possible websites for your topic.

The system would allow for, and encourage, tweaking queries for even better results. This allows your bookmarked queries to become better through the community using the site.

A community member would be able to request a query update where the original query creator would have the option of appending the change or branching the query into a related branch query. Related branch queries are a mechanism to see what other queries had be spawned from your original, perfected query.

Features
  • Easily store and recall search queries in all major browsers
  • With your account you can make a query public or private
  • Public queries can be searched, viewed and modified by other users
  • Modified queries requests are sent to you so you can chose to update your query with a better, advanced query
  • Queries can be branched, or spawned, from an existing query. All query branches can be followed to see how a query has developed over time
  • Complete user account management
  • IE and Firefox toolbars to easily 'capture' queries
  • Queries could attempt to tweak themselves by the user providing a target webpage. The system would then try and create the best possible query that brings the webpage, and like results, into the top spots in the designated search engine.
  • Browser toolbar could have a Query Suggestion button where the system reads the page and attempts to create a query based on the pages content and the system knowledge of advanced query creation.
Imagine how many pages will be indexed in 5 or 10 years and as pages indexed increase it would make sense that bookmarked pages would increase also. By bookmarking a query you greatly reduce your bookmarks since a single query, on a topic, can replace large groups of page bookmarks.

Obviously a lot needs to be worked out but this is the basis for the website. First on block is a big thing and so far nobody else is doing this. I think this is a great idea and I just don't have the time to implement so I thought I would release the idea and see what happens.

Discussion going on now at DonationCoder about this idea

Email me if you develop it and donations accepted :-)

Scriptomatic 2.0

A completely new version of the famous Scriptomatic, the utility that writes WMI scripts for you. (And, in the process, teaches you the fundamental concepts behind writing WMI scripts for yourself.) Unlike its predecessor, Scriptomatic 2.0 isn’t limited to writing just VBScript scripts; instead, Scriptomatic 2.0 can write scripts in Perl, Python, or JScript as well. In addition, Scriptomatic 2.0 gives you a host of new output formats to use when running scripts, including saving data as plain-text, as a stand-alone Web page, or even as XML. Scriptomatic 2.0 handles arrays, it converts dates to a more readable format, and it works with all the WMI classes on your computer; on top of all that, it also writes scripts that can be run against multiple machines.

Now that's a display!

Engineers at the University of California, San Diego have constructed the highest-resolution computer display in the world - with a screen resolution up to 220 million pixels.

The new HIPerSpace system between Irvine and San Diego is joined together via high-performance, dedicated optical networking that clocks in at up to two gigabits per second (2Gbps). The systems use the same type of graphics rendering technology, from industry partner NVIDIA. The "graphics super cluster" being developed at UCSD consists of 80 NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 graphics processing units (GPUs). "The graphics and computational performance of these cards is quite astounding," said Kuester. "Putting the theoretical computational performance of the cluster at almost 40 teraflops.

Anyone else remember Rocky's Boots

Am I the only one that played this game? A quick discussion over at DC brought back memories of Rocky's Boots. Funny thing is the graphics were actually decent for back in the early 80's.

Rocky’s Boots was a visual simulation that made it possible for upper-grade-school students to design simple digital logic circuits, using a joystick to move around circuit symbols on the screen and plug them together. The circuit components were AND gates, OR gates, NOT gates, and flip-flops. The colors orange and white were used to show the logic states ‘1’ and ‘0’ of the components, so that as the circuit operated, the signals could be seen propagating through the circuits, as if the electricity was liquid orange fire flowing through transparent pipes.

Is Outsourcing Right for Your Business?

Many businesses still are very hesitant to embrace outsourcing as a means to growing their practice and increasing productivity. To help you decide whether outsourcing is right for your business consider the following common questions:

Q: How can I be sure private client data will be secure?

A: Superior security measures and processes; make sure you have a signed service agreement (including confidentiality guarantees). Some important security features to look for when choosing a vendor are if they support a paperless monitored work environment. Consider network security such as if their site is encrypted and uses a firewall. Also, verify how they hire their employees. Do they adhere to stringent background checks and do they require a particular level of education or training?

Q: Is it against the law or code of ethics to utilize outsourcing?

A: No, as long as disclosures are made to the client. There is typically a provision in most privacy statements that disclose that the firm may be a need to disclose client information to third parties who provide help in servicing their accounts. Most firms reference outsourcing directly or indirectly in their privacy statement in order to comply with the Graham Leach Bliley Act. In either case, as long as the taxpayer is assured that his/her return will be reviewed by the firm's tax department prior to filing, they generally respond favorably to outsourcing.

Q: How can I be assured that the work being done meets the high quality standards that I guarantee my own clients?

A: Again, investigate whether the vendor employs a skilled staff. Verify that the vendor performs quality checks and audits by seasoned U.S. staff and conducts rigorous and continual ongoing training of the tax and accounting team.

Q. How can I ensure outsourcing will be successful for me?

A. Communication with vendor. In the end, it is up to both the vendor as well as the client to make sure the lines of communication are open. The more the vendor understands the needs and work flow of the client and the more the client understands the outsourcing process, the better the relationship will be for both parties.

Clearview to replace Highway Gothic

The typeface is the brainchild of Don Meeker, an environmental graphic designer, and James Montalbano, a type designer. They set out to fix a problem with a highway font, and their solution — more than a decade in the making — may end up changing a lot more than just the view from the dashboard. Less than a generation ago, fonts were for the specialist, an esoteric pursuit, what Stanley Morison, the English typographer who helped create Times New Roman in the 1930s, called “a minor technicality of civilized life.” Now, as the idea of branding has claimed a central role in American life, so, too, has the importance and understanding of type. Fonts are image, and image is modern America.

HOWTO: View answers on Experts Exchange

If you have ever done a search for a technical issue then you may have come across Experts Exchange and noticed that the answers are all masked. The only way to see the answers was to signup for an account to have the answer unlocked.

Masked Answer Sample:
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Networking/Q_21660493.html

There is a way to see the answers that works pretty well. I should note that this is for reference only and should not be used to bypass their signups.

Steps
  1. Download and install the Google Toolbar
  2. Ensure the Page Rank and Page Info button is on the toolbar (located under More Buttons on the Option Dialog)
  3. Navigate to the Experts Exchange page you want to view
  4. With the page loaded click the down arrow next to PageRank button the Google Toolbar and select Cached Snapshot of Page
That's it. The cached snapshot displays the unmasked answers. Why? Because it would appear, in my opinion, that Experts Exchange breaks the guidelines of Google by serving a different page to the GoogleBot (Google's crawler) then it does to its website users. GoogleBot receives pages with unmasked answers so they can be indexed.

If the sites are related in business -- e.g., an auto manual site linking to an auto parts retail site, then it could make sense -- the links are organic and useful. Cross-linking between dozens or hundreds of sites, however, probably doesn't provide value, and I would not recommend it."

Is it Rocketboom or is it Memorex

WebbAlert, with Morgan Webb, appears a lot like Rocketboom. The difference is that the information is much more main stream and cutting edge (as far as what's hot in the blog world). Interesting enough that I may follow the video blog for a bit and see where it goes. Will it keep my interest over time? Not sure yet.

Comodo Free Firewall is better than what comes with WinXP

Unfortunately, most firewalls leak. But Comodo's Firewall is unique in that it passes all known leak tests to ensure the integrity of data entering and exiting your system. Comodo has put firewall through all kinds of sophisticated tests to ensure its firewall powerful enough to ward off these attacks with default settings. No other firewall has had to work this hard.

Features from Comodo's website:
  • PC Magazine Online's Editor's Choice
  • Secures against internal and external attacks
  • Blocks internet access to malicious Trojan programs
  • Safeguards your Personal data against theft
  • Delivers total end-point security for Personal Computers and Networks

I was a long time user of Sygate's personal firewall but when it was acquired by Symantec no more updates were provided and the firewall and all future development just died. I continued using Sygate until locating Comodo, and so far, has proved to be a great firewall.

Organized collection of Javascript Libraries

Very nicely organized collection of Javascript Libraries. Now if they would only provide a description under each title. Either way I like it and have bookmarked it.

How To: Bulletproof Server Backups with Amazon S3

We all know that it is important to keep recent backups of anything you value at all, so why not automate the process? Until I started tinkering with S3, my server backup process involved manually downloading and compressing the contents of my server and storing the compressed file on my hard drive. That usually took longer than I’d like so I wouldn’t do it terribly often. The main benefit of backing up with S3 is that you take advantage to your server’s high-speed connection and bypass the need to download files over your connection, as well as safely store files somewhere other than your own server.
