Programmers all have their pet peeves. Whether it's scope creep, Hungarian notation, or smelly coworkers, we've come to accept that there are certain nuisances that come with our line of work. The following is a list of the top 10 things that annoy programmers, compiled from the results of my recent question on StackOverflow (you must be a closed beta tester to access the link) along with some of my own experiences as a programmer: These are pretty spot on. Humans have a natural tendency to find order in sets of information, a skill that has proven difficult to replicate in computers. Faced with a large set of data, computers don't know where to begin -- unless they're programmed to look for a specific structure, such as a hierarchy, linear order, or a set of clusters.
Now, in an advance that may impact the field of artificial intelligence, a new model developed at MIT can help computers recognize patterns the same way that humans do. Link: http://www.physorg.com/news138893926.htmlLabels: technology
This is a great way to look at a website and see what links are tagged as NoFollow, meaning the link will not count as a vote in Google. This is a must on your website if you don't want to be penalized for linking to know spammer sites or what Google calls a 'Bad neighborhood'. With this little Firefox hack you can quickly see what links have been tagged - for reviewing your website or any other. Link: http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/seeing-nofollow-links/Labels: css, seo
TinEye is the first image search engine on the web to use image identification technology. Given an image to search for, TinEye tells you where and how that image appears all over the web—even if it has been modified. This is a very cool, specialized search engine that can really help find out if someone is stealing your images. Its kinda of like copyscape but for images. TinEye is what I used to find out that a blogger had stolen one of my blog posts and had hot-linked the images from my server. Check it out, it's worth the time... "In computer science, a hash collision or hash clash is a situation that occurs when two distinct inputs into a hash function produce identical outputs." Why you shouldn't be hashing with MD5 anymore if you have access to the SHA-1 algorithm. MD5 collisions can be made in hours or minutes on a standard notebook computer. This basically renders the hash useless for highly sensitive information. Link: http://www.links.org/?p=6Labels: security
