Relocate the menu bar in IE8 to the top of the window

Would you rather have the menu bar in IE8 to be more like Firefox, or other Windows application, in the sense that it will appear at the very top of the window? A simple reg hack will get that going for you.

1) Copy the bold text below into a text file (between the lines)
-----------------------------------------------------------
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\WebBrowser\]
"ITBar7Position"=dword:00000001
-----------------------------------------------------------
2) Save the text file with a REG extension (like toolbar.reg)
3) Double click the file and allow it to update your registry
4) Shut down IE8 (if open) and restart it.

In time for summer, make your own BBQ sauce

There are several types of BBQ sauce. Most traditional BBQ sauces either use tomato sauce, mustard, or vinegar as a base, and they come in all thicknesses. For instance, North Carolina barbecue sauce is thin and runny, while Kansas City barbecue sauces are thick and sticky.

There are also variations of sauces known as mopping sauces, which is regularly slopped all over the meat while it is cooking. Finishing sauce is used as a condiment when eating barbecue and is not used during the cooking process.

New zune to bring touchscreen

The new Zune is coming with some much needed improvements:

  • Zune HD comes with a built-in HD Radio receiver so users can listen to higher-quality sound than traditional radio on the go. Users also will have access to the additional song and artist data broadcast by HD Radio stations as well as additional channels from their favorite stations multicasting in HD. If you don’t like the song playing on your station’s HD channel, switch to its HD2 or HD3 channels for additional programming.
  • The bright OLED touch screen interface allows users to flip through music, movies and other content with ease, and the 16:9 widescreen format display (480x272 resolution) offers a premium viewing experience on the go.
  • The HD-compatible output lets Zune HD customers playback supported HD video files from the device through a premium high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) audiovisual docking station (sold separately) direct to an HD TV in 720p.*
  • Zune HD will include a full-screen Internet browser optimized for multitouch functionality.
  • Zune HD is Wi-Fi enabled, allowing for instant streaming to the device from the more than 5 million-track Zune music store.

Now if they would just fix the horrible software that is used to update the media or release an API so developers can incorporate the Zune syncing in their own software, like Media Monkey.

100 Wicked Tips for PhotoShop from Adobe Employees

This year we decided to try something a little different. In the past, we’ve invited some of the best designers and trainers in the industry to share their top secrets. This usually took a lot of bribing and just a little physical coercion—okay, a lot of physical coercion. Most of them just didn’t want to give away their most-guarded secrets.

This time around we decided to go straight to the horse’s mouth: the Senior Product Managers at Adobe. We have never seen so many people so eager to share all of their favorite tips. They were almost breaking down our doors. (In fact, we’ve had to request a few restraining orders, but that’s a story for another time.) And not only that, everyone on their teams wanted to get involved, as well: Product Managers, Evangelists, and even the janitors. We’re glad to report that we’ve survived their barrage of tips, and we’re proud to be able to share those tips with you. Please enjoy.

Why to not over analyze a movie plot line

In the article 5 Reasons The Terminator Franchise Makes No Goddamn Sense you see why you shouldn't over analyze a movie plot line, especially in a series. The article points out the holes and inconsistencies.

A little off topic for me but it was an interesting read.

Easily add ratings to your website

You can easily add a rating system to your website with JS-Kit. This is a great way to get immediate feedback on your website products, listings or posts from your visitors. Also, if you haven't heard Google will be displaying Rich Snippets which may include ratings. So, get your ratings now and possibly enhance your listings in a Google Search Result snippet.

From JS-Kit:
The best content on most web sites and blogs gets buried as new content is added. JS-Kit's Ratings service solves this problem by uncovering and displaying your top content. It lets your visitors rate your merchandise items, services, pictures, blog entries, or any other objects on your site.

The service can be used in two modes, either as a 5-star rating widget or a thumb-up/-down widget and is incredibly easy to install on any static or dynamic web page.

Comments in Google search results?

I sure hope not. What a mistake it would be to allow public comments in Google search results. All I can see is the blackhat SEO guys hammering the comments to help bring down the competition's websites. Why? Because the amount of clicks a search results gets can affect its overall rankings. Bad comments means less clicks, means it position could drop.

CSS Formatter and Optimizer

I feel better after running some of my CSS code through the CSS Formatter and Optimiser as there wasn't a whole lot that it did. Warned about using bold instead of a number, which is weird as I rather have it say bold as it better dictates intent.

If your not familiar with optimizing CSS, you should run your code through just to check.

CSS Sprites

CSS Sprites: What They Are, Why They’re Cool, and How To Use Them:
Do you really understand them? The name might be a little misleading, because sprites aren’t little images like you might be picturing, a sprite is actually one big image. Have you ever seen the CSS technique where the “on” and “off” states of a button are contained within the same image and are activated by shifting the background-position? Think of CSS Sprites as an extension of that technique. The difference is that instead of just two or three images being combined into one, you can combine an unlimited number of images into one.

CSS Sprites: Image Slicing’s Kiss of Death:
Specifically, we’re going to replace old-school image slicing and dicing (and the necessary JavaScript) with a CSS solution. And because of the way CSS works, we’re going to take it further: by building a grid of images and devising a way to get each individual cell out of the grid, we can store all buttons/navigation items/whatever we wish in a single master image file, along with the associated “before” and “after” link states.

CSS Sprite Generator:
This tool allows you to automate the process of generating CSS sprites. Simply give it a ZIP file containing 2 or more images (GIF, PNG or JPG) and it will generate a sprite image and the corresponding CSS rules to target and display each component image.

Fixing FastCGI timeout error in IIS (PHP)

Received this error on a slow running PHP script on my server:
The FastCGI process exceeded configured activity timeout IIS

How I resolved it:
  1. Goto %windir%\system32\inetsrv\fcgiext.ini
  2. Locate the ActivityTimeout parameter and copy it into the [php] section of the ini file
  3. Make sure the ActivityTimeout parameter is uncommented out
  4. Change the number to whatever you want (units are seconds)

(by default ActivityTimeout is set to 30 secs)

Get your copy of Windows 7 RC (legally)

Welcome to Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC) testing. We're on our way to Windows 7, and if you like trying out pre-release software, now’s your chance. You get to see what's coming, and we get to see if our changes and fixes from the Beta testing are working correctly.

How do you test the software? You put it on your PC, and then do what you'd normally do. Your PC will automatically and anonymously send our engineers the information they need to verify the fixes and changes they made based on the Windows 7 Beta tests.

I currently have Windows 7 RC running in a Virtual PC and so far so different. Going from XP to 7 is going to be a shock.

What is Wolfram?

Wolfram Alpha is backed by Stephen Wolfram, the noted scientist and author behind the Mathematica computational software and the book, A New Kind Of Science. The service bills itself as a “computational knowledge engine,” which is a mouthful. I’d call it a “fact search engine” or perhaps an “answer search engine,” a term that’s been used in the past for services designed to provide you with direct answers, rather than point you at pages that in turn may hold those answers.

Do a search on Wolfram Alpha, and if it has matching data, it presents a ton of information on a single page, from figures to charts. For example, a search for “newport beach” not only shows the current temperature and forecast but also provides easy access to historical temperatures, which also get charted:

Will this be revolutionary? Is this just hype that will go nowhere? We'll see. Hopefully Wolfram will send me an invite so I can check it out
